You wanted to learn something new last week. So you did what everyone does — you opened YouTube, searched for a tutorial, and 45 minutes later you had watched someone else do the thing without actually doing it yourself. Sound familiar?

Today, we are moving from passive consumption to active mastery — by activating the learning modes already built into the AI tools you use every day.

Three layers of learning with AI

Not all AI learning is created equal. Think of it in three layers:

  • Layer 1 — Video (YouTube): Passive. You watch. You absorb some. You forget most. Good for exposure, bad for retention.
  • Layer 2 — Chat (Standard AI): Better. You ask questions, get explanations, and can go at your own pace. But it's still reactive — you are driving the conversation, which means your blind spots stay blind.
  • Layer 3 — Interactive (AI Learning Modes): The best. The AI quizzes you, challenges your understanding, asks you to explain concepts back, and adapts to your level. This is where real learning happens.

Learning lab vs. search bar

Here is the difference in practice. Say you want to understand talent retention strategies for your HR role:

  • Search bar approach: "What are the best talent retention strategies?" — You get a generic list. You skim it. You move on.
  • Learning lab approach: The AI asks you what you already know, identifies gaps, teaches you a framework, quizzes you on it, and then asks you to apply it to your specific team situation. You walk away with understanding, not just information.

Your AI experiment: Activate professor mode

Time to tinker: Each major AI platform now has a built-in learning mode. Here is how to activate them:

  • Gemini: Go to Gemini Tools > Guided Learning. Select a topic and let Gemini structure a learning path for you.
  • ChatGPT: Use Study mode (available in ChatGPT Plus). Upload a document or describe a topic and ChatGPT will create flashcards, quizzes, and explanations.
  • Claude: Use the Learn mode to have Claude teach you interactively with questions and concept checks.

If you want to go deeper, prime the professor with this prompt:

The prompt:

"Act as an expert professor in [topic]. I want to deeply understand [specific concept or skill]. Start by assessing what I already know — ask me 3 diagnostic questions. Based on my answers, create a personalized learning plan with 3-5 modules. For each module, explain the concept, give me a real-world example, and then quiz me before moving on. Adapt your teaching style based on my responses. If I get something wrong, don't just correct me — explain why I got it wrong and what mental model I should use instead."

Pro tips

  • Stress test your understanding: After a learning session, ask the AI: "What do I still not understand based on our conversation?" It will identify gaps you didn't know you had.
  • The teach-back loop: Ask the AI to let you explain the concept back to it, then have it grade your explanation. Teaching is the fastest way to learn, and AI is an endlessly patient student.

What did you discover?

Did the interactive mode feel different from just reading or watching? Did the AI catch a misunderstanding you didn't realize you had? The goal is to make AI your personal tutor — one that never gets tired, never judges, and always meets you exactly where you are.
