Your OOO is the most-read thing you write. Why`s it so boring?

Your OOO is the most-read thing you write. Why`s it so boring?

Think about it. Your Out of Office auto-reply is the one piece of writing that is guaranteed to be read by every single person who emails you while you're away. Clients, colleagues, recruiters, partners — they all see it. And what do they get? "I am currently out of the office with limited access to email. I will respond upon my return."

That's not an OOO. That's a missed opportunity.

Today, we are using AI to write Out of Office messages that actually do something — reinforce your personal brand, leave a memorable impression, and remind people you're a human being, not a corporate auto-responder.

Why this matters

Your OOO message does three things most people overlook:

  • It reminds people you're human. In a world of polished LinkedIn posts and carefully curated professional personas, a well-crafted OOO is a moment of authenticity. It says, "I'm a real person who takes real breaks."
  • It leaves a memorable impression. Most people forget 99% of the emails they receive. But a clever, unexpected OOO? That gets screenshot and shared. It starts conversations. It makes people smile.
  • It reinforces what you're known for. If you're known for being creative, your OOO should be creative. If you're known for AI expertise, weave it in. Your OOO is a branding moment hiding in plain sight.

Use case spotlight: The AI-powered OOO

As someone who works with AI daily, Natalie uses her OOO to reinforce her brand by referencing her AI teammates. Instead of the standard "I'm away" message, she writes OOOs that playfully suggest her AI crew is holding down the fort — reviewing pitches, drafting strategies, and keeping things running while she recharges. It's on-brand, memorable, and it always sparks replies.

Your AI experiment: Try this prompt

Time to tinker: Open your favorite AI tool and paste the prompt below. Replace the bracketed sections with your own details.

The prompt:

"Write 3 Out of Office auto-reply messages for me. Here is the context:

  • My name: [Your name]
  • My role: [Your role/title]
  • What I'm known for: [Your area of expertise or personal brand hook]
  • Where I'm going: [Vacation, conference, sabbatical, etc.]
  • Dates I'm away: [Start date] to [End date]
  • Emergency contact: [Name and email, if applicable]

Generate 3 variations:

  1. Lighthearted and witty — make the reader smile.
  2. Professional with a creative twist — polished but memorable.
  3. Short, punchy, and humorous — under 4 sentences.

Each version should reinforce my personal brand and include my return date and emergency contact."

Pro tips

  • Push the creativity: If the first round feels too safe, follow up with: "Make it even more playful" or "Write one as if a robot is trying to impersonate me" or "Write one as if I'm on a secret mission" or "Write one where my to-do list is plotting against me."
  • Match your audience: If you email mostly C-suite executives, lean toward the professional-with-a-twist version. If your contacts are creative peers, go full witty.
  • Test it: Send a draft to a colleague and ask, "Would you remember this OOO tomorrow?" If the answer is no, iterate.

What did you discover?

Did one of the variations surprise you? Did you find a voice you didn't know you had? Your OOO is a tiny canvas — but tiny canvases are where some of the best branding happens. Make it count.
